Based on the info available from the various casting numbers and my memory of the junk truck we pulled it from, this is what Betty will be getting.

Small Block Chevy Casting Numbers

Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing.

Casting Date Example: E038 – (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

Casting Date K181

Based on this logic

Betty’s New Heart Casting Date: K181 – (K = Month of November, 18th Day, 1 = Last digit of model year (1991)).

Quick update as of 1/2/2023 I just brushed off the gunk that was covering the serial number and got a little surprise.

The serial Number

In the event that the Internet is correct this block is from 1975 ! So the stamped serial number is not as much a specific serialized block number as a born on date and location.

The assembly plants include:

  • F for Flint (1955-1966),
  • H for Hydramatic,
  • K for St, Catherines, Ontario,
  • M for General Motors in Mexico,
  • T for Tonawanda,
  • S for Saginaw Service, and
  • V for Flint (1967 and up).

This block is stamped V1211TXA if you break it down

V – Flint Michigan 12 – Month December 11 – 11 day TXA- in table below data from here

Engine CodeYearCubic Inch DisplacementApplicationEngine VinHorse PowerEngine VinGM Body/Comments
TXA1975350conv.cabL LS91654C-20 to 3500

Conclusion: No clue. The casting number says it was built 10 years after the stamped number says?!?
